The Waiting Game

I made it home yesterday via the single-speed Varsity.  I decided that hitching a ride would be the easy way out, and the earliest they could show was 5:30pm.  So, I manually coaxed the chain up onto the second smallest cog  and took off, rather briskly.  Turns out that bike does amazingly well as a single-speed even on the hills.  I opted for the long gradual one over the short and steep by taking Exchange home.  Having drop bars really made a difference with the headwind and getting into a nice comfortable position to dig in.  Not sure I would have been as comfortable on the FX in that situation.  We actually made the commute in record time!

Not bad at all.

Until I dropped it off at the shop this afternoon.  The response to the problem was not enthusiastic.  Since the bike is going on 40, parts are hard to come by and the system Schwinn used on these is complicated.  I'm still waiting on the call with the diagnosis.  Hopefully, it won't be too awful (as in replace everything), but they didn't seem too positive.

We'll see....
