It only took several months and a lot of tinkering to finally finish the dog's bike basket. Its bigger than the pet baskets on the market, but our dog is a little larger than the usual canine bike passenger. Since he was too big for a basket and too small for a trailer, there didn't seem to be anything that would allow him to join us on our all day rides. Now, he too can ride a bike! It provides plenty of air flow, stands up to his weight, and also gives him lots of headroom while keeping him protected and secure.
The Mr.'s custom dog basket fits inside a cargo basket we picked up at Falls Wheel & Wrench.
The frame is made of metal strapping covered in window screen. The sides are enclosed with bungee cords so its easy for us to get him in and out, but prevents him from escaping on his own. Plus, they provide plenty of space for him to stick his head out and enjoy the breeze. The pad is some foam from the craft store in a pillow case that provides ample cushion for the bumps. He has a safety harness that clips to the inside for extra security. The structure stands a rather tall on the bike, but it isn't very heavy and didn't cause any balance issues. Our dog is pretty good about sitting still too. The best part is, it is completely removable from the cargo basket if we want to haul groceries instead of the canine.
They took a few test spins and I'd say the reaction was rather positive, wouldn't you?
Cool blog - don't know how I missed it before. Dogs on bikes? Just silly. Here's mine: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jitahs/2588755571/in/photostream
ReplyDeleteJim, that is awesome! What a great idea with the wine box!
ReplyDeleteThanks! She's sleeping in it right now after a long day in it yesterday.
ReplyDeleteDogs are great.
Love the doggie basket! My husband is going to work on something along the same lines for our Boston Terrier.
