We picked up the trailer last night and dropped off the FX and Revenio for pre-flight tune-ups. Turns out I abused the FX a little more than I realized. It was in need of a new cassette and chain! That just goes to show how much consistent cycling affects the wear on the bike. Most people probably don't need to replace their chains after a year of owning a new bike, but this one was ridden almost every day. I've heard that you typically need to replace a chain after a year, but I was under the impression that type of thing really only applied to those who rode for hours at a time every day. Apparently I was more serious of a cyclist than I realized. Guess I need to check my chain more frequently. Heh. Since I'll be riding every single day in Luxembourg, I really need to step it up when it comes to preventative maintenance. Cassettes will be a little more expensive in Lux than here. Anyway, I know the bikes will be in good shape for the move next month.
I can't stress enough how important it is to spend some time at your local LBS. If you're new to this like I am, their expertise is invaluable, They'll not only help with the stuff you can't handle or fix some tinkering mistakes, but they'll give you some good tips (like how to measure chain wear). Now when I talk about going to the LBS, I'm not referring to the bicycle department at Dick's Sporting Goods. Your local bike shop is staffed with knowledgeable mechanics with plenty of experience on the bike too. They are your best resource. I know I'm going to miss those shops I've come to rely on.
Of course, there will be plenty of reliable shops in Luxembourg too. They do have a bike path network after all...
