I would like to report a missing event. If you've seen this event, or heard where it may have wandered off to, please report it. To those that have done away with it (yes, someone noticed), please return Akron Bike Week and we will forgive you, no questions asked. Akron Bike Week, if you're reading this, know that you are loved and missed by many people. Please come home.
Last year, it was a big deal. I mean, check out this calendar of festivities! Heck, even the Mayor showed up for it! This year, I haven't heard a peep about it. The City is silent, the University of Akron hasn't mentioned anything, and UA Park Alliance is mum on the issue. Even the website is stuck in 2010. Meanwhile, it's listed on a few event calendars as taking place September 3-10. With that only a week away, one would think something would be planned by now.
Granted, many people that ride their bikes around here aren't interested in learning safety skills or taking jaunty little trail rides with officials (or being sober, for that matter), but it was a great event that garnered support for cycling in Akron. If it is indeed not happening this year, it would be nice to know. Then the grieving process can begin.
In the meantime, I will be holding out hope that it is still out there somewhere, being loved and organized by some kind soul.
I haven't heard anything about it. Too bad too, as it was a great series of events.
